Practical Residency & Examination Guidelines

Prescribed under Pharmacy Council of India ER-2020 norms and administered in partnership with the Mizoram State Council for Technical Education (MSCTE).

Part III — Hospital Practical Training (Residency)

After successfully completing the Part II annual examination, candidates must undergo not less than 500 hours of clinical training spread over a minimum of 3 months in recognized government/civil hospitals or licensed dispensaries.

  • Prescription Dispensing: At least 250 hours dedicated exclusively to hands-on prescription dispensing and patient counseling.
  • Drug & Device Stocking: Maintaining storage conditions, emergency kits, cold chain maintenance, and inventory control (FEFO/FIFO).
  • Statutory Record Keeping: Working knowledge of registers required under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, NDPS Act, and Pharmacy Practice Regulations.
  • Formal Contract Triplicate: Administered through the official 'Practical Training Contract Form for Pharmacist' signed with the designated Apprentice Master.

Examination Scheme & Minimum Passing Criteria

Periodic sessional assessments and annual board examinations conducted by the Mizoram State Council for Technical Education (MSCTE):

  • Sessional Tests (Best 2 of 3): Three examinations are conducted within each academic year; the average of the highest two performances forms the final internal assessment (20 marks).
  • Theory Sessional: 40 marks (3 Long Answers × 5m, 5 Short Answers × 3m, 10 Objective × 1m) reduced to 20 marks.
  • Practical Sessional: 80 marks reduced to 10 marks + 5 marks Assignment + 5 marks Field Visit Report = 20 marks.
  • Pass Requirements: Minimum 40% in theory and 50% in practicals separately (including sessional marks). Minimum 40% internal marks required to appear for final exams.
  • Honors Criteria: 60% or above in aggregate = First Class; 75% or above in any subject = Distinction.

Diploma in Pharmacy Exit Examination (DPEE) Regulations

PCI Notification 2022

Under Section 10 & 18 of the Pharmacy Act 1948 and DPEE Regulations 2022, candidates completing D. Pharm must qualify the Exit Examination to receive their Certificate of Eligibility for Enrolment and Practice before registering with the State Pharmacy Council.

3 Multiple-Choice Papers: Pharmaceutics, Pharmacology, Pharmacognosy, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Biochemistry, Hospital & Clinical Pharmacy, Jurisprudence.
Passing Benchmark: Minimum 50% marks in each of the three papers in the same attempt (conducted in English; no restriction on number of attempts).

Handle prescriptions professionally, verify completeness, check therapeutic correctness, and contact prescribers for necessary clarifications.

2 Dispense Prescription & OTC

Dispense scheduled drugs under the Drugs & Cosmetics Act and guide judicious use of non-prescription over-the-counter remedies.

3 Provide Patient Counselling

Educate patients on medication regimens, adverse reactions, device techniques (inhalers, insulin pens), and lifestyle modifications.

4 Hospital & Community Pharmacy

Administer procurement, inventory management (EOQ, FEFO), cold-chain integrity, unit-dose drug distribution, and regulatory filings.

5 Expertise on Medications

Deliver evidence-based therapeutic advice to clinicians and allied healthcare professionals regarding safe, efficacious medication use.

6 Pharmaceutical Formulations

Master chemistry, properties, excipients, packaging parameters, and quality control of modern and sterile dosage forms.

7 Entrepreneurship & Leadership

Establish sustainable community retail enterprises, utilize digital pharmacy billing tools, and practice collaborative leadership.

8 Primary & Preventive Healthcare

Promote national immunization campaigns, health screening (BP, glucose), hygiene awareness, and environmental disease prevention.

9 Professional, Ethical & Legal Practice

Maintain uncompromising professional ethics, patient confidentiality, statutory compliance, and uphold the Pharmacy Act.

The central library houses comprehensive reference collections, standard PCI-recommended textbooks, pharmaceutical pharmacopoeias, and scientific periodicals to nurture inquisitive inquiry.

Key Library Regulations:

  • Each student receives two (2) library cards, each eligible for one volume.
  • Books are issued for a maximum duration of 7 days (1 week) including holidays.
  • No single book may be renewed for more than three consecutive weeks.
  • Late return charges of ₹5/- per day are levied beyond the due date.
  • Lost or defaced books must be replaced with a fresh copy or reimbursed at original price + 50% handling fee.
  • All visitors must sign the visitor's register upon entry.
